FAQ Friday: Your Advice Questions Answered!

Question:

I have a rabbit that won’t stop peeing on my bed. He isn’t neutered and has been peeing on my bed off and on. I love my rabbit but it’s very frustrating and I was hoping you had some advice to help fix this problem.

Thanks for your help!

J.

Answer:

Hi J,

There’s a few things I would suggest to help eliminate this behaviour. Getting your rabbit neutered is definitely something that I would recommend. Rabbits who aren’t neutered are more inclined to mark their territory as their own and their urine will also be smellier. If there are other animals who sleep on the bed your rabbit will be able to smell this and have the urge to claim that area as his. If your rabbit continues to do this I would suggest either preventing your rabbit from having access to the bed altogether or put old blankets on the bed beforehand that you could wash afterwards. Another good alternative would be a couch cover. There are pet oriented ones that have a waterproof layer on one side which would work well to stop any pee from leaking through on to your bedding.

REVIEW: Herb-Ball by Little Bunny Guru & Small Pet Naturals

IMG_7295

The Herb-Ball is an all natural treat handmade by Little Bunny Guru & Small Pet Naturals. This small twig ball is stuffed with hay, homemade rabbit safe cookies, camomille and other seasonal herbs. This ball satisfies your rabbit’s natural urge to chew and is a healthy treat for your small pet. It is also a great boredom breaker as it requires your rabbit to get pretty crafty to get to the treats inside.

IMG_7025I knew Ollie would be the perfect candidate to test out this toy! He normally doesn’t care for toys unless there is food involved. Instant success! The next thing I knew he was running around with it in his mouth! When he finally calmed down he began digging at the ball to get to the little bits inside! Ollie has a fairly sensitive stomach but as the ingredients were all natural he didn’t seem to have any digestive problems afterwards.

Pros:

  • Satisfies your rabbit’s urge to chew
  • Keeps your rabbit’s brain busy and prevents boredom
  • Entire product is edible
  • Safe, all natural treat that seems gentle on even sensitive tummies
  • Would also be safe for guinea pigs

Cons:

  • I really don’t have a con for this product! When I opened it I knew it would be an instant success! As it offers a variety of different ingredients I feel that even a rabbit that is not food oriented would be inclined to take a nibble here and there!

At first glance this product does seem a little costly however I think it’s worth every penny! It is handmade and has only all natural ingredients without hidden additives, preservatives and sugars like many shop bought treats.

You can see how excited Ollie was about this treat here.

Meet Dandy! Dandy is a a 5 month old Holland Lop and a little special as he is missing one ear. His Mommy chewed it off accidentally when he was just an itty bitty baby but it doesn’t seem to bother him any! Dandy loves to get into mischief, enjoys his hay and pellets and doing the Bunny 500 around the house!

Thanks Megan and Emily!

Box & Tunnel Toy!

IMG_7040This is a great and inexpensive way to add some fun to your rabbit’s floor time. It also mimics a rabbit’s natural habitat by providing a series of tunnel systems for them to run and explore!

Materials:

  • Cardboard boxes (These can be any size although you may want to avoid any that are too small for your rabbit to fit through!)
  • Cat tunnel (I get mine from the dollar store however if you don’t have these already, can’t find them in your area or they are too pricey you could also use different rectangular boxes or large mailing tubes to create the same effect.
  • Box cutter
  • Pencil, pen or marker to mark cut outs
  • Any other toys or treats you have around the house that you may want to hide inside for your rabbit to find!

Cost:

  • $0-$3 This could be free if you only use boxes and tunnels you’ve already purchased. Since these tunnels are from the dollar store they cost me $2 plus tax.

Assembly:

IMG_7110

Begin by deciding which side of the box you want your tunnel to go through. Hold the tunnel against the box and draw around it to get the right size for your circle.

IMG_7111

Now use your box cutter to cut along the outline you drew. You have the perfect hole to fit your tunnel! Now repeat this on the other box so you can pop the other side of the tunnel through it and connect the boxes together!

IMG_7102

You could get really creative with this and have an entire system of boxes and tunnels that connect together! Make sure that you also cut a few doorways so your rabbits can get in and out of the maze!

IMG_7053

I also like to add a few toys and fun things for my rabbits to find within their tunnels. In the larger box there is an old yellow pages book which the rabbits love to dig and shred! I’ve also added a few willow toys and a couple treats for them to find!
