BudgetBunny Book Review

If you’re thinking about a rabbit, you don’t know the first thing about your new pet or you’re always interested in furthering your knowledge on the subject then watch the video below in which I talk about my favourite rabbit resources.  These books and magazines have helped me to become a bunny expert, given me some great ideas to enrich my rabbits lives and helped me remain calm during an emergency situation.

Hanging Nibble & Chew Toy

This toy will provide hours of excitement for your rabbit!  See them try to pull it down, swing it around and chew away!

Materials:

These can vary greatly depending on what you already have in the house but here are some suggestions –

  • Wooden shapes (not dyed and all natural)
  • Plastic bottle caps
  • Pieces of cardboard
  • Kraft paper
  • Wooden beads (not dyed and all natural)
  • Toilet paper / paper towel rolls
  • Thick twine
  • Book Ring
  • Drill (optional)
  • Scissors, pencil, 3 hole punch, utility knife (optional)

Cost:

  • Again this is dependent on what supplies you’re choosing to use but can range anywhere from being free up to $10 if you’re buying many of the supplies for the first time.  Again many of these things like the twine, book rings and wooden shapes come in large quantities so you’ll be able to use them in further projects.

BudgetBunny Money Savings Tip:  This is a great time to browse your local dollar store.  The large wooden shapes I used for our hanging toy all in came in packages of 10-20 shapes at Dollarama.  A few of the smaller wooden shapes I found at the local craft store where a pack of 50 were around $3 and the wooden beads were in a pack of 50 for $5.

Assembly:

If you wish to use any hard items like wooden shapes or plastic bottle caps you’ll want to drill a hole in the center of each one.  I prefer to spend some time drilling all of the items I have laying around that need drilling first so I’m ready when a new idea pops in my head!  If you’re under 16 have an adult do this for you.

If you are using items such as kraft paper, t.p. rolls and cardboard start cutting these in to smaller pieces.  Try cutting circles a few inches wide out of the paper and a 4 inch wide rectangle out of the cardboard.  I cut the t.p. rolls in to smaller rings.  Next you’ll want to poke a hole in each of these.  You can use a hole punch for this part, sharp scissors, a pencil or knife just be careful not to cut yourself!

Cut yourself a piece of twine about 18″ long.  This gives you lots of extra if the twine starts unravelling (as mine does) while putting on your chew items.  Leave a loop at the top so you have a way to fasten your toy to the cage.  And finally it’s time to put the toy together!  Choose a mixture of items, sliding each one on the string until you’ve reached your desired length.  Triple knot the toy at the bottom and cut the excess string off.  Use a book ring to fasten the toy on your cage and watch the bunnies go nuts for it!

Book Rings

Some of the upcoming DIY toys I will be posting about need to be hung from the top of your cage.  You could tie, binder clip or zip tie them but I thought these were perfect!  Not only do they easily fasten to your rabbit’s home and toys but they are easy to remove and therefore reusable.  I bought a pack of 18 for around $4, more than enough for 4 rabbits!  You should be able to find these at any office supplies store – it’s no secret where I picked these up!

Bunday Sunday!

This is Oreo who is believed to be an English Spot.  Oreo’s first family severely neglected him by leaving him in a tiny outdoor hutch to weather the elements.  When Lori first met him he had no water, barely any food and no bedding or hay.  Lori felt so bad for him she immediately asked the owner about him who wasn’t willing to give him up.  That night Lori snuck in to their backyard and rescued Oreo from a life of abuse.  She says the first few days were very emotional, he was severely malnourished and had been starving to death with little muscle tone from being confined to such a small space for so long.  She could feel every bone in his body.  She brought Oreo in to her room where it was warm and where he had fresh water, food, unlimited hay, a multitude of toys and everything else he could possibly need.  After the worst was over, Oreo started moving around more, gaining weight and coming out of his shell!  Now Lori says Oreo has become the most amazing rabbit!  He loves to snuggle, grooming her while she pets him before spreading out to sleep on her bed with her every night.  In the morning she is woken up to tiny nose bonks and kisses.  Lori says although Oreo’s behaviour proves he is eternally grateful to her for saving his life, it is her that feels blessed.

What a wonderful story and thank you for sharing it with us.

Thanks Lori!

Bunday Sunday!

This is Brian.  As many of you may know, Brian was a featured Bunday Sunday Bun back in July 2010.  Sadly he passed away this week after a brave battle with a recurring phenomena.  We will all miss you Brian (@BrianBunny). You may be gone but we will never forget you.

Below is the most beautiful message Karen wrote to her Twitter friends.  In it she recounts bringing Brian home and her life with this amazing Bun.  Take a moment to read her beautiful words – it is clear that Brian was one lucky rabbit!

“I loved Brian with everything I had, the hole he has left behind will never fully mend but knowing that so many of you loved him too has helped to ease the pain and even though your many messages and actions have made me cry more than I knew possible, they have not all been tears of sadness.

Brian Bunny was a lionhead who was a lionheart too. He was always my brave little soldier. I saw him in a pet shop that I went into with a work colleague (this is not something I would advocate now however and would always advise a sanctuary/rescue centre every time). I had never owned a bunny and had no intention of going home with one that day. But I saw this tiny white fluff ball sitting there looking completely different to all his siblings and it was love at first sight. I also knew straight away that his name could only be Brian.

And so Brian Bunny became our free range house rabbit and the centre of our lives for two months shy of his tenth birthday. The house will just never be the same without him.

Even though Brian was nearly ten, he was never really an old bunny, in looks or in character. He had a real zest for life, his eyes never losing their sparkle and often shining brightly with mischief or out on stalks at the mere whiff of anything remotely ginger smelling, running around madly and jumping all over the furniture and us. He was such a happy and well loved bunny, a real fluffy bundle of joy. I have always described Brian as a “nice” bunny because that is exactly what he was, so gentle and placid. He was soft to the touch and soft by nature and was a real attention seeker.

We tried to bond him many times when he was little, to find him a girlfriend, but he was never interested, he just didn’t like other bunnies! He bonded with us immediately though, and the bond shared between Brian and I was so strong that the pain at his passing that I feel right now will never truly fade.

I believe there is a unique bond shared between a bunny and their human, a special bond that only a bunny and their human can fully understand or appreciate. A relationship based on relative silence but one that can change lives. I will never be without bunnies in my life now and look forward to sharing my life with them again once my shattered heart mends.

I will always be left bereft and devastated by Brian’s passing but you, our Twitter friends, have helped me more than you will ever know. I will still use this account in his memory but will tweet as Brian’s Mummy and I very much look forward to chatting with you all, old friends and new. Thank you for being with us.

With much love from me, Karen, and I feel quite sure that Brian Bunny would like to give every single one of you a *heavenly big bunneh hug* too 🙂

……………

Brian my beloved little man, you were so very special in every way and you will be with me always.
RIP Beautiful ❤ “

Meet Butterscotch who was adopted from a local shelter and believed to be a Holland Lop.  She is a complete snuggle bun but also loves to play and hide in her cardboard box!  Her favourite food is parsley and she doubles as a guard dog, doing morning rounds around the house to make sure everything is up to her satisfaction before flopping in her bed.  What a sweet bunny!

Thanks Omeama!
