FAQ Friday: Your Advice Questions Answered!
Question:
Hi BugetBunny.
I found a young bunny out in the yard, I think it is old enough to leave it’s mother but I’m not sure. The mother or the nest was not any where near where the bunny was. The bunny is very sweet and all but I am not sure what to feed her. She does not seem to want to eat pellets or hay. Every time I try to feed her she puts her head in a corner.
What do I do?!
C
Answer:
Hi C,
Mom bunnies leave their babies for most of the day and you’ll see very young ones out on their own. The Mom will probably be nearby. She’s wild so you shouldn’t be feeding her or trying to give her water and it is best to leave her alone. If the baby rabbit’s eyes are not open then chances are she’s come up from the nest which is most likely close by and Mom will bring her back to the nest when she returns at dusk. If bunny seems alert and has her eyes open then she is old enough to be out and about with Mama Bun. In that case Mom is most likely close by or baby is waiting for her to come back. In the meantime, you can keep a close eye on her from a distance to make sure predators don’t get her if that’s what you’re concerned about – perhaps from a window – as Mama Bun is unlikely to come around if you’re present. If you are truly concerned that she is really not doing well I would contact your closest wildlife rehab or vet for suggestions. They may want to pick her up and bring her somewhere to be rehabilitated and later released in to the wild.
Bales4Bunnies To The Rescue!
I knew we were getting low on hay but it didn’t really sink in until I was halfway through my last bin that I only had a few days supply left! Frantic, I contacted Bales4Bunnies to see if we could arrange a delivery ASAP! Luckily for me the bunderful Robyn was more than accommodating and showed up moments after I had filled my bunnies’ hay racks with my last handfuls of hay!
The bunnies are binkying in delight that we now have four wonderfully farm fresh smelling bales of hay to last them over the summer! Phew! That was a close one!
If you’re in the Peterborough area, you should check out their website:

Bun Bun Visits Disney!
This past week the fam and I were off to sunny Florida to finally meet Mickey Mouse! None of our crew had visited Disneyworld so it was quite the memorable experience! We landed early Saturday morning and were greeted by a nice warm breeze and a beautiful clear, sun-filled sky – nothing like what we had left behind in chilly Toronto! We stopped at Applebees for some lunch and then continued on our way to our new home for the week!
The house we rented was beautiful! It was spacious, had a pool and plenty of bedrooms! But we didn’t plan on being there much, there was too much we wanted to see and do!
After getting a good night’s sleep we were off on our first adventure – to SeaWorld! The younguns are all animal lovers and were really excited about seeing everything SeaWorld had to offer! There were massive aquariums with rays that swam over your head and sharks that swam around you. The dolphins were always popping their heads up to say hi, the seals loved to show off and there was even an octopus that contorted itself to fit in to tiny tubes and behind rocks! Without doubt, the highlight of the day was seeing the gorgeous killer whale show where they happily did flips, jumps and dives.
Next up we visited the Polar Express that began with a short movie, then opened up to Santa’s Village where the sky was full of the Aurora Borealis, the air smelt of cinnamon, there was real ice to touch (us Canucks weren’t as thrilled about that as fellow Floridians), you could meet Santa and the belugas swam around us! For the first time we got to see rescued manatees and sea turtles, some who would recover and be released and some that would spend the rest of their life away from harm’s way at SeaWorld. We were also really impressed by SeaWorld’s conservation efforts. They really seemed to take care of their in-house marine life, but have also rescued and rehabilitated thousands of animals since the park opened. They encouraged recycling, only consuming sustainable seafood and keeping the beaches and oceans clean.
Our next adventure was to Magic Kingdom! We boarded a ferry on the mainland and set sail towards Cinderella’s castle! Main street was decorated for Christmas and a wonderful site to see. Then, just as we approached Cinderella’s castle, a Celebration parade broke out! What an amazing experience!
We spent the remainder of the day touring the kingdom and going on rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Thunder and Space Mountain. The parentals had a ton of fun on Space Mountain! They’re still talking about it!
We ended the night with a spectacular light show and an amazing display of fireworks! What a magical day for us all!
After all of that hustle and bustle a therapeutic shopping day in Downtown Disney was in order! The Lego store was a site to see! There were life size Lego versions of Woody and Buzz Lightyear and even a Lego monster in the lake!
The Disney store left us all speechless and we spent a few hours shopping in there! I got to see the crocodile that ate Captain Hook’s hand. I’m glad he wasn’t the real thing though!
The next day we set off to see the world at Epcot. What a unique experience! We went on a tour of the land, found out what it was like to be a viking and went Soarin’ in the clouds!
Not having travelled too much, I especially enjoyed getting a glimpse of each piece of the world with replicas of many featured monuments of the world. We also loved that the cast members at each section of the world were actually from there!
We spent the remainder of the afternoon back at Magic Kingdom, doing a few more rides we had missed!
Our final Disney day was spent at Animal Kingdom! We started with a safari through Harambe! There were lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos and a giraffe we could have touched it was so close to the vehicle! I didn’t see any bunnies though! Next we visited the Tree of Life which is over 145 ft. tall and has over 400 animals carved into it. What a beautiful masterpiece!
Just beyond that we met up with Rafiki, got soaked on the Kali River Rapids and found the Yeti in Mount Everest! What a day!
Our last day was spent back at Downtown Disney where the fam picked up those last few things they wanted and where they had hoped to go on an air balloon ride but it was too windy. It was too bad, I hadn’t been on one before and was looking forward to it! We spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool, going for a walk around the resort lake and then out to dinner for our final Florida meal. What a memorable and magical experience for all of us!

Pet Rabbits Beneficial To Women’s Health
The trend of having rabbits as pets has been popular for quite a while now. Yet, only recently have specialists managed to prove that those animals are not just pretty but also good for our health. Now, the relatively new technique of having cells with bunnies present during consultation sessions with psychologists and psychotherapy is becoming increasingly popular.
The new study was conducted by a team of specialists from the University of Missouri and was led by Professor Rebecca Johnson. The results of the study show that even mere presence of bunnies giveswomen sense of calmness and tranquility. Furthermore, the scientists observed decrease in the level ofstress hormone cortisol in the women’s bodies after they petted those fluffy animals for a few minutes.
Dr. Johnson notes that presence of a bunny in a household and the process of taking care of it facilitate social bonding, teach women and girls how to better understand themselves and others, and how to communicate with other people more effectively. In particular, women who had rabbits also had better control of their emotions and behavior. Bunnies used as part of therapy also facilitate healing of serious illnesses in children and adolescents, such as autism or depression, and help them cope with lack of confidence.

If you’re thinking about a rabbit, you don’t know the first thing about your new pet or you’re always interested in furthering your knowledge on the subject then watch the video below in which I talk about my favourite rabbit resources. These books and magazines have helped me to become a bunny expert, given me some great ideas to enrich my rabbits lives and helped me remain calm during an emergency situation.
A Day At The All About Pet’s Show!
One of my most favourite events to attend annually is The All About Pets Show. Held Easter weekend at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, it is the largest pet showcase in Canada and most importantly, dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership to it’s guests.
Since my husband and I are lovers of all animals, we find all areas of the pet show intriguing. After snuggling all of the adorable puppies and rescued animals, watching the Reptile Show, chatting with the parrots in the Birds of Paradise section and being entertained by the Dock Dogs we finally made it to the Rabbit area. My favourite part of the day is of course visiting Rabbit Rescue and O.R.E.O to score some sweet deals on toys and food for the Bunnies.
Sadly this year Rabbit Rescue didn’t have it’s own booth but a few volunteers had joined forces with O.R.E.O to help spread bunny awareness. They also brought along a few rabbits up for adoption.
I got to chat with O.R.E.O, tell them about my website and find out a little more about them. O.R.E.O – The Ontario Rabbit Education Organization is a non-profit association run by dedicated rabbit lovers! They are volunteers spreading awareness about the health and well-being of domesticated buns. They travel around to different venues to help educate the public on pet rabbits since so many people buy rabbits on impulse, not realizing the proper care, time and dedication it takes to have a pet rabbit. They advocate that rabbits shouldn’t be left outdoors in hutches but make great indoor companions.
They have a great website on proper care, tips and health for rabbits – you can check them out at the address below:

My favourite part about visiting O.R.E.O is all of the cool toys and products they have for sale! Not only are they always really creative, but they’re a great price! Plus they always have great deals on food and hay as well as some other cool Bunny products! I’ve never come away empty handed!
After a long day my husband and I headed home, hands full of goodies and excited to spoil the kids!
If you’re an animal lover and you live around the Toronto area, next year be sure to check out the All About Pets Show!

HAPPY EASTER!
February Is Adopt A Rabbit Month!
Perhaps you’ve seriously been considering adding a rabbit to your family or you already have a rabbit and are looking for her soulmate.
What better place to find your new bunny than at a Rabbit Rescue or Shelter! February is adopt a rabbit month so why not give a rabbit a second chance at a wonderful life! Rabbits are the 3rd most surrendered animals to shelters. As a result there are also too many rabbits being put down. Give a bunny a second chance by checking out your local humane society or rescue for your new friend.
This year is more crucial than ever to adopt instead of shop – shelters have already seen an influx in rabbit surrenders due to the ‘Year of the Rabbit’ craze and Easter is just around the corner. Many people love the novelty of a cute and cuddly looking rabbit, not realizing the care and time that comes with them.
Remember that a rabbit is a big responsibility – read our blog Bringing Home Bunny as well as Building Your Own Rabbit Condo for tips on proper housing, diet and care – and the decision to bring one in to your household should not be taken lightly. That being said, rabbits are quirky, sensitive and adorably sweet, making a wonderful companion!
And if you’re not ready to make the commitment but are still passionate about rabbits consider making a donation to a rescue or shelter in your area. Your money could help neuter or spay a rabbit in need, provide food and temporary housing or pay for any medical treatment a bunny is in need of.
Either way, you can feel good knowing you’re helping an animal in need!
