The Dreaded Shedding Season

Rocky sporting the dreadlock look!

It’s that time of year again….and unfortunately for us bunny lovers the shedding of their coats comes not once but four times a year!  Our bunnies are beginning to look a little miffed with tufts of fur sticking out here and there.

In general rabbits shed more than cats and dogs and with 10 animals, I can vouch for that!  Although I usually recommend brushing your rabbits coat once a week (sometimes more or less depending on how long their coat is) during shedding season you’ll need to be doing it daily.  A cat brush works great on medium to long coats because it attracts the hair so it’s not flying all over the place.  Be careful with short haired rabbits as a prickly brush could be painful to them.

It is crucial that you are consistent with grooming when your rabbit is shedding.  Rabbit’s are diligent cleaners who lack the ability to throw up so when a hairball gets stuck in their stomach it can cause a blockage and turn in to stasis rather quickly.  Although your rabbit should always have fresh hay available, frequently checking in on them and topping up their hay is recommended to help with digestion (after all you’re not going to be able to brush out every stray hair your rabbit is losing).

When grooming my rabbits during shedding season, I prefer to use my hands by petting my rabbit and gently gripping where I can see the loose tufts sticking out.  I’m not pulling or grabbing, but just applying a little more pressure and curling my fingers in so my rabbit isn’t uncomfortable or in pain but enough that I’m able to remove the loose hair.  Sometimes this can go on as long as a half hour per rabbit (as I said they shed more than cats and dogs).  It can be a messy job accompanied by many a sneeze so I like to sit in the backyard in a chair and let the tufts of fur blow away in the wind.  This also makes me feel good that the neighbourhood squirrel or nesting birdy nearby will find something warm and soft to add to their home when they’re foraging.

After 30 sec. of brushing!

And remember – shedding can make your bunny extra grumpy.  I find it annoying can you imagine how your bun is feeling?!  Rocky is so irritable right now that he boxes at me when I try to take him out of his cage and has been doing a lot of hurrumpfing at me!  Try not to take it personally, Buns will be happier once you’ve brushed out the loose hair and some extra treats and snuggles couldn’t hurt to win him/her over either!

This ‘chore’ as it’s become in our house has gotten me seriously wondering – where the heck does all of this hair come from?  Rocky sheds 3 rabbits worth a day!  Strangest thing of all, is that his is all white or light grey, yet he is a jet black haired rabbit!  Bunny Lovers I think we can all agree that we’ll be happy when shedding season is over!

Alternative Hay Rack

Just something I found at the dollar store the other day!  A wooden tissue box that I easily transformed in to a hay basket.  Keeps the hay pretty neat and tidy while the buns are enjoying their free roam time and it’s okay if they nibble here and there on it!

Bunday Sunday!

Submitted By: Danielle

Cat (yes she has named her rabbit Cat) is an 8 week old Mini-Lop.  Danielle wanted a rabbit for some time before her boyfriend finally gave her one so I’ve deemed Cat a love-bun.  Danielle says her entire family has fallen in love with Cat who although is new to the family has caught on quickly!  She waits at the cage door with her nose poking through for Danielle or a family member to let her out!  It sure didn’t take long to learn the term ‘guilt trip’!

Thanks Danielle!

The T.P. Treat Box

A very quick and easy toy that’s great for nomming and absolutely free!

Materials:

  • toilet paper roll
  • hay and some goodies

Cost: Free!

First fold one end of the toilet paper roll in by folding in one half of the roll and then the other half on top of it to create an overlap and prevent the goodies from falling out.

Next you’re going to fill the roll with hay and treats and finally create the same overlap on the other end.  Just like that, you’re done and you have a safe and fun treat box for delicious snacking!

Bunday Sunday!

Submitted By: Kelli

Josephine (Jo for short) is a 3 year old Lionhead who Kelli named after her Dad, Joseph because of the rockin’ mustache he sports.  Since Jo’s mustache is so pronounced she knew there was no one better to name her after.  Kelli says she is extra spunky and has lots of personality.  She is also very caring to her mate Franklin.

Thanks Kelli!

Bunday Sunday!

Submitted By: Melissa

Meet Dennis! Melissa rescued this Netherland Dwarf Mix over 8 years ago and estimates Dennis to be around 9 years old. Melissa says it took some work to bond with Dennis, he had been neglected by his previous owner causing some aggressive behaviour.  Since then he has come out of his shell and loves a good snuggle and giving bunny kisses.  Dennis was even a doting husband for a few years! When Dennis eats his favourite treat banana his bum muscles twitch and spasm in excitement!

Thanks Melissa!

Treat Ball

I recently discovered these great toys that are intended for cats but are also fun for rabbits too!  They’re a ball that you put treats inside.  Your pet then has to figure out how to move the outer part of the ball so the squares line up and the treat comes out!  Your rabbit will enjoy pushing the ball around with his nose, gripping and tossing the toy by the cutout squares and will spend lots of time trying to get the yummy goodies that are waiting inside, out!  Ollie was having fun pushing the ball and pawing at it, then discovered how exciting it was when a treat popped out!  Imagine his surprise!  Now it’s become one of his favourite toys! (Anything that involves food can be considered his favourite).  I have seen these at pet stores for around $8 but picked mine up at the dollar store for $1.50!

Bunday Sunday!

Submitted By: Colleen

Colleen is not sure about their breeds but Charlie is a large female with black and white spots while Duggar is about half her size and brown.  Colleen says Charlie is the Queen B while Duggar is her ‘meek’ husband.  Guess we know who’s in charge of that relationship!

Thanks Colleen!

Quick Toys With Paper

These may seem really basic but sometimes the most obvious things can be overlooked.  So here are two toys that take only seconds (okay maybe minutes but the point is they’re really quick) and are so easy you’ll be saying to yourself, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?!’.

Materials:

  • Kraft paper, packing paper, newspaper or regular undyed paper
  • Sisal rope

Cost: Free!

For the first toy, cut a 6″x6″ square out of your paper.  It doesn’t have to be exact, so don’t worry if it’s not quite square or a little larger or smaller.  Then just crunch it up!  This will create a lightweight ball that’s fully nibble-able.  Easy to chew and toss!  Voila!

One of Rocky’s favourites, this second toy is going to follow the steps of the Mini Treat Bag but if you don’t have any goodies this is a great alternative.  Start by cutting a 6-8″ square out of the paper.  Now place one of those crunched up balls you just made in the centre.  Then just wrap this up and tie with the sisal rope.  Tie right above the ball to create the bubble shape, leaving about an inch or so of extra paper for your rabbit to nibble.  Rocky absolutely loves tossing these around and best of all there’s no mess!
